Momma Always Told You Not to Game, but Boy Was She Wrong: Professional Gaming

How many times did your mother tell you to put down the video games and make something of yourself? If you’re in a job you hate and you would rather be playing video games, perhaps you shouldn’t have listened to her.  When top professional gamer salaries range from over $100k to $200K, you might want to tell her she was wrong (Though don’t mention the ‘no retirement’ part)(Oh, and don’t mention the average gamer only makes $12k – $30k).

Companies also provide non-monetary compensation for gaming with them. Sometimes it is free hardware, other times it is early access or event access. While a gamer’s salary might seem smaller, the non-monetary compensation makes up a portion of it.

Dear mom did have a good point, though. For each individual who has made it in the professional gaming industry, thousands have failed.  It requires dedication beyond what a casual gamer dreams of putting in to a game.  It requires money, it requires time, and it requires sacrifices.  Interaction with actual humans is reduced and replaced with voices over the microphone since team games require a lot of practice.

But don’t let that discourage you. Even the casual player can make money in the gaming industry.  A father and son duo made a couple thousand dollars a month live-streaming their games online and running advertisements on their site. Because of gaming, the son was able to build up a college fund (I bet your mother never told you about that part of gaming).

There are two main types of streamers: Those who are technical and those who are charismatic. People who want to learn the ins and outs of games tend to gravitate more towards the technical streamer.  These gamers go very in-depth with game play, describing why things happen and explaining their actions within the game. In contrast, charismatic streamer might not ever go into detail about why he or she chooses a particular weapon, class set, or action. Instead, the charismatic gamer provides entertainment, sometimes trolling others and sometimes trolling his or herself.

That being said, everybody has their haters. No matter how good of a gamer you are, you will have your own trolls creeping your stream and posting on your web pages. You have to be mentally resilient and able to fight back.
